About the event
By the end of the 19th Century, Champaign was home to thirteen Christian congregations that had occupied some twenty different church buildings. Only four of those buildings remain; three of them within blocks of each other in the downtown area. Our inaugural Historic Churches walking tour will include stops at First Presbyterian, First United Methodist, Emmanuel Memorial Episcopal, and Holy Cross Catholic Church. Along the way, we'll learn the stories of these buildings, their predecessors, and about the many other historic church buildings of early Champaign. Our guide, Rick Williams, is a retired educator and journalist who has spent several years conducting research in local church history.
