At the Champaign County History Museum, we love bringing history to life by allowing our members and supporters to experience the community first hand.  We hold tours throughout the year with a variety of focuses.

Downtown Champaign Historic Buildings Tour

Join us as we explore downtown Champaign's history through an in-depth look at some of Champaign's historic structures and locations. Learn about some of the devasting fires that shaped downtown along with some of our community's favorite businesses. This tour is perfect for community members looking to reminisce and reconnect with their memories of the past and for new community members looking to learn more about their new home's community history.
The tour travels around a mile and a half and takes approximately an hour and a half make sure to wear comfortable walking shoes. We ask that guests park their vehicles in the police station parking lot to the North of the Champaign County History Museum. We will meet at the CCHM to begin the tour. The tour will start at the designated start time so please plan to arrive at the museum at least ten minutes before the tour is set to begin.

Vice and Crime Tour: Prohibition in Champaign

Downtown Champaign has seen many businesses, theatrics, and events over its history though no era was more chaotic than when the C-U went dry. For our true crime lovers, this tour explores the vices of the early 20th century including brothels, illegal speakeasies and gambling halls, and corruption within the city government. Join us as we travel through downtown Champaign exploring the history of prohibition and its vices.
The tour travels around a mile and a half and takes approximately an hour so make sure to wear comfortable walking shoes. We ask that guests park their vehicles in the police station parking lot to the North of the Champaign County History Museum. We will meet at the CCHM to begin the tour. The tour will start at the designated start time so please plan to arrive at the museum at least ten minutes before the tour is set to begin.

Historic Champaign Theater Tour: 

Join us as we explore downtown Champaign's history through an in-depth look at some of Champaign's historic theaters. While the Virginia Theater remains the area's only operational theater downtown Champaign has seen its fair share of theaters, opera houses, and movie theaters. Some might be easy to spot while others have been long lost to history. This tour is perfect for those interested in general Champaign history and the arts as we take a look back at theatrical productions and shows of the past.

The tour travels around a mile and a half and takes approximately an hour and a half to conduct. We ask that guests park their vehicles in the police station parking lot to the North of the Champaign County History Museum as the lot is not metered on the weekends. We will meet at the CCHM to begin the tour. The tour will start at the designated start time so please plan to arrive at the museum at least ten minutes before the tour is set to begin.

Haunts and Legends of UIUC: 

The University dates back to 1867 and rumors of hauntings, scary stories, and oddities have been passed down from generation to generation. Whether you're a current UIUC student, an alumnus, or Champaign-Urbana community member we're sure you've heard some of these legends. Come and join us for a spooky tour as we explore these legends, how truthful they are, and tell you tales of the University's past.

This tour will begin at the Quad Side of the Illini Union at Anniversary Plaza at 7pm and will cover a mile and a quarter in distance and will take around an hour and a half to complete.
